    Fall Gardens

Living in Dallas means getting your gardening done early. By this time of year we have temperatures that stay consistently in the way upper 90s and even in the dark of night it rarely gets cooler than 89. I usually plant tomatoes, sticking with varietals that tolerate the heat well. But by now they’ve stopped setting on. Typically, if you leave the tomato plants in the ground, they’ll produce a small crop in September and October. But that’s all I’ve ever known about fall gardening. That’s until I saw this post from the folks at Ready Made. They list several resources for gardening almost year round, including the What to Plant Now web site, which I found really helpful.

The site allows you to search by region and month for crops that will do well in your area and even tells you whether to start the seeds outside or indoors. I can’t wait to try my hand at growing radishes and summer squash and maybe even a little broccoli.

    The Birds and the Teas

A very cute way to repurpose an old teapot. If I could figure out how to cut a hole in a teapot.

    The Home Team

Whether it’s after a morning jog or a long day at work, the door to your own home is a pretty good place to end up. This doormat from Generate makes it an official finish line. Last one there has to make dinner.

These are like little alien paradises trapped in jars.

    Sweet Cakes

Cupcakes have been all the rage for a few years now. I know the Sprinkles here in Dallas is as popular as ever and the folks in my office can decimate a box of those tiny cakes in five minutes flat. So I suppose it’s a little surprising that the iconic dessert hasn’t popped up in decor design sooner. These polyethylene Sweet Cake containers are perfect for indoors or out.

    Freaky Friday

Never mind the secret garden, this garden has a secret. A terrible secret. This has to be the creepiest statue I’ve seen in a while. Possibly ever. See more weird garden decor found on Amazon.com here.

    Patio Living

It’s actual winter in Dallas for once - i.e. 12″ of snow last weekend and weeks of consecutive cold temperatures. So, of course, I’m thinking of summer. When actual summer gets here, mosquitoes will remind me of why I don’t really like summer. But, until then I will fantasize about this lovely patio set from Target and Smith and Hawken. Right now the whole set (including canopy) is marked down to $851.

    Outside the Box

Succulents are some of the most simply beautiful plants you will ever find. That makes this simple wood-slat window box the perfect place to put them on display.

    Urb Garden

This vertical garden doesn’t just grow herbs, it also composts food scraps with a little earthworm farm and, when mixed with water, creates liquid fertilizer that helps the plants grow.

    Back to Work Blues

Nothing brings on a bad mood like the first Monday after a long holiday. But this bad-attitude doormat cheered me up significantly. And it’s from Target, which makes me love Target all the more.
