Talk Drink of Something Better than Water

These Hearken Flute Glasses from Anthropologie really caught my eye. I love the extra long flute and short stems, and the soft pastel colors remind me of some vintage glassware I bought from an estate sale. $24 each.

I’m really digging this overdyed kilim rug in bright rose from Urban Outfitters. The price is right, too – $49 for a 2″x3″ and $129 for a 3″x5.” Also available in sky blue.

    Starting the Year Off Right

I have to admit I’m not a New Year’s resolution gal. The prospect of doing something for 365 days is just way too daunting. But I do think the new year is a great time to try to form positive new habits. Like actually tracking the calories I burn instead of guessing that a 30 minute walk roughly equals a cheeseburger’s worth. To that end, I just ordered the Fit Bit One – $95 from It not only tracks steps, distance, calories burned, and length and quality of sleep – it’s also small enough to hide under your clothes. (Above: New Year card from Hennel Paper Co, $4)

I also decided to do a better job of keeping the house tidy. I’m a stacker. I come into my clean house and immediately start stacking mail, books, magazines, coats, and clothes on every available surface rather than putting them back where they belong. It turns out changing this behavior is pretty simple using one trick a friend told me about: if it will take less than a minute, do it right now. So far so good. I found a few more simple cleaning tips over at Real Simple – including how to pick up pet hair with a wet rubber glove.

    Happy New Year everyone!

Minimizing the Ugly, Without Breaking the Bank!

Recently, I had a realtor contact me who deals with investment properties but had been unsuccessful moving this particular home for over a year. One step through the door and I knew why…it had a case of the “uglies”. With the main culprit being a blue and white checkered ceramic tile floor that, because of budget, was going nowhere!

Now, I don’t know if you’ve ever been hired by someone in your own field…holy cow that can be challenging….It’s like a doctor being a patient! He recognized he needed help, but I was met with push back at my suggestions on how to minimize the “ugly”. Enter “decorator Kathy” along with my associate Sam and her flair for design. We collaberated on how to transform this home by minimizing THAT floor and updating the kitchen and master bathroom on a $2000 budget.

Choosing the right paint tones, inexpensive backsplash, discount counter tops along with a few light fixture updates and replacing a plate glass mirror with framed mirrors, resulted in this home being our Cinderella story of the month. Multiple contracts within 2 days in the midst of a snowstorm is proof positive that simple changes can make all the difference. Tell us how you fix the “uglies”!
