Lately, I’ve been on the hunt for raw wood coffee tables like the one above. Unfortunately, what I found was outside the range of what I was willing to spend ($800 +). But, on a recent visit to Dallas, I found an entire truckload of raw-edge walnut boards at Wood World. My dad was nice enough to drive it to Austin where we started working on it this weekend. It is not an easy task. I haven’t done this before and didn’t realize that the board I saw as smooth was actually covered with saw marks (see below).
Three hours of sanding later, we had everything smoothed out.
So far I’m into this thing for $210 of materials:
board: $120
electric sander: borrowed
sandpaper: $10
four reproduction hairpin legs: $80
time: 3 hours
injuries: 0
Next up: choosing and applying a finish. I’ll keep you posted.
