I’ve been lookng at this pie safe from Plow and Hearth for a couple of weeks now. It’s beautiful. The detailing on the pewter is fabulous. I’m familiar enough with Plow and Hearth products to know it will be well made. But I just can’t get over the fact that it’s $699 plus $80 in extra shipping. This means over 800 bucks when all is said and done. I hate when I absolutely love something but feel like the price is just more than I’m willing to spend.
What do you guys think? Am I a cheapskate or is this really more expensive than it should be?

Given it’s made with actual wood, and is made by hand on this continent where companies generally pay workers a fair living wage, I’d say it’s priced just about right. I’d even say it’s underpriced, but pine is a very affordable wood to work with and the piece is pretty simple to build.
Try to think long term… pay $800 ONCE for something your grandchildren could be passing down, or pay $400 every few years to replace some characterless mass-produced piece of planned obsolescence you found at a big box store.

Sidd, that’s an excellent point. I hadn’t even considered that it was probably made somewhere other than China. How sad is that, when we automatically assume things are made in China? Sigh. Thanks for the comment.
