Sunken living rooms, leopard print, avocado green…trends come on strong. But when they go out, they can take entire rooms with them.
We all want our home to look fresh and stylish, but who can afford to change color schemes and motifs every 6 months? And yet, there’s some new and amazing trend dazzling our eyes every two minutes.
In this month’s Domino "Best" issue, they asked professionals about decorating mistakes they can’t help but make. Coral, one of this summer’s biggest motifs, was cited as one of those mistakes.
So what to do if you just bought a set of fabulous pillows with coral appliqué? Don’t panic. Franki at Life in a Venti Cup reminds us that there is nothing wrong with latching on to a trend for the right reasons.
If you love coral, or skulls, or orange for their core coralness, skullness or orangeness, go for it. Even if the hipsters have already moved on to the next greatest thing.
But just for giggles, here’s my list of 10 design trends that are starting to wear a little thin (don’t hate me, I’ve loved all these things too):
1) skulls
2) coral and shells
3) Audubon-style prints
4) wall stickers
5) chandelier motifs (not the real thing)
6) bird motifs
7) tree branch motifs
antlers and faux deer heads
9) Tord Boontje
10) the "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster

the antler trend really does slay me. There’s something unseemly about having only part of an animal lying about on a table or wall…this from a dedicated carnivore.

I got a “Keep Calm” poster, but it’s hanging at work in our staff room where it is appropriate- not in my living room.

I can’t imagine a more appropriate place for that poster.
